The Appalachia Daily for May 30, 2026, Saturday

A rainy Saturday calls for indoor plans, plus local safety news and family events in the Appalachia Daily Update from the mountains.

Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Arrests Neighbor After Shots-Fired Call

Deputies with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office arrested a neighbor after a shots-fired call on Wild Byrd Road in Murphy. It happened back on May 23rd when a dispute turned ugly with gunfire aimed at an 18-year-old on an ATV. No one was hurt. Investigators moved fast and wrapped it up this week. Good to know the team stays on top of these things before they get worse in our quiet neighborhoods.

Sheriff Chris Wood Shares May 2026 Monthly Report

Sheriff Chris Wood shared his May 2026 monthly report on Local TV 4 this week. He laid out the straight numbers on calls for service, arrests, and everything the department handled last month. It is worth a look if you want the real picture of what is going on around the county.

Kids Fishing Day Today at the Sheriff’s Office Range in Marble

Today is Kids Fishing Day out at the Sheriff’s Office firing range and ranch in Marble. It runs from 9 AM to 1 PM. Bring the kids, learn some basic fishing, grab lunch, and spend a low-key Saturday together.

Rainy-Day History Lesson at the Cherokee County Historical Museum

For something educational and local, head to the Cherokee County Historical Museum right in downtown Murphy. The old Carnegie Library building is packed with Cherokee artifacts, pioneer history, and exhibits that tell the story of our mountains. It is a perfect way to spend an hour or two indoors and learn more about where we live.

Cozy Indoor Browsing at Murphy Art Center and Antique Shops

Another easy one is browsing the Murphy Art Center or the antique shops downtown. You will find local crafts, paintings, glass art, and unique mountain-made treasures. It is cozy, slow-paced, and a great way to support local makers without stepping outside.

Family Fun at Harrah’s UltraStar Multi-tainment Center

For a little more energy, Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River Casino has the UltraStar Multi-tainment Center with bowling, arcade games, and family-friendly indoor entertainment. Plenty to do while the rain keeps falling.
