Unrelenting Exhibit at the Museum of the Cherokee People

The Museum of the Cherokee People in Cherokee continues its major exhibit Unrelenting: Cherokee People and the American Revolution through December 30. The show pairs historic objects with new works by Eastern Band and Cherokee Nation artists, centering Native perspectives on the 250th anniversary and the Cherokee American War era.

Fort Butler Returned to EBCI Stewardship

The Town of Murphy transferred the Fort Butler site, a key location on the Trail of Tears, to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians this summer. Principal Chief Michell Hicks described the move as an important step in preserving history and strengthening sovereignty.

Cherokee County Historical Museum Completes Expansion

The Cherokee County Historical Museum in downtown Murphy now occupies the full historic Carnegie Library building. Visitors will find more than 2,000 Cherokee artifacts, a replica 1830s dwelling, and official Trail of Tears interpretive status.

Jan Griggs Installed on Cherokee County Board

At a special meeting on August 5, the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners accepted the Republican Party nomination and installed Jan Griggs to fill the vacant District 5 seat. Commissioners also discussed animal-control issues with county departments; a public hearing will precede any ordinance.

Ribbon Cutting Set for August 28 in Hiawassee

Grass Guitars and Moore Love will celebrate their opening at the Paris Business Center Incubators in Hiawassee on Friday, August 28 at 2 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. The invitation came by direct email to the show.
