Storm damage and trail caution in Nantahala
Severe storms on Tuesday left structure damage in Peachtree and near Andrews, along with downed trees, power lines, and widespread outages. The U.S. Forest Service is assessing roads and trails across Nantahala National Forest, particularly in Graham and Swain counties. Hikers and drivers should use extra caution this weekend and watch for hazards.

Multi-agency methamphetamine seizure
A multi-agency investigation led to the seizure of more than 21 ounces of methamphetamine destined for Cherokee County. On July 24, officers recovered more than a pound during a traffic stop in Gilmer County, Georgia. Harold Wayne Wolfenbarger faces multiple drug-related charges and is held without bond. An earlier related seizure in Cherokee County added to the total. All individuals named are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Blue Ridge Street work coming to Blairsville
The City of Blairsville plans to begin the Blue Ridge Street Improvement Project next month. The work includes resurfacing between the square and Earnest Street, drainage repairs, and pedestrian safety upgrades. Night crews will help limit daytime disruption, and businesses along the route are expected to remain open.

Appalachian Trail section reopens at Iron Mountain Gap
The Appalachian Trail Conservancy reports the Iron Mountain Gap section is officially open again after extensive Helene recovery work. The temporary detour is being decommissioned. Some overgrowth and remaining trail repairs are still present, so hikers should plan accordingly.

National Night Out in Peachtree
National Night Out is scheduled for Tuesday, August 4, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Tri-County Community College in Peachtree. The free event brings first responders, law enforcement, fire, and EMS together with neighbors for vehicle displays and community activities.
